This casework was built during a semester long design course with a focus on chest of drawers. My goal was to create a clean and cohesive design that encouraged closer examination. I wanted to give the bureau layers and a feeling of there being hidden elements just out of sight. The piece has the illusion of a draped, dark and uniform material floating over a light and wavering box. It stands 46" tall x 33" long x 17" wide. The case, applied drawer fronts and door are all veneered MDF panels. This was my first entirely veneered project and it allowed me to use exotic species that I would not have otherwise felt comfortable working with. The exterior is quarter sawn wenge, and the door and reveals are ash burl. The interior of the cabinet is curly ash, and behind the drawers is straight ash. The drawer and webframe, the only solid wood components, are also ash.
Judges' comment
"The level of design and craftsmanship within the student category reassures the judges that our craft will continue."
